The Scottish Government and NHS Scotland have been working closely with the UK Government and international bodies. Key to this is the World Health Organisation - the United Nations' specialised agency for health.

Those in the phase one priority groups will continue to be offered vaccination over the spring and summer period to the end of September 2010.

This will include women who become pregnant; people who are newly diagnosed with a condition which places them in the priority groups; and frontline health and social care workers. Vaccination will offer protection against the continuing low levels of H1N1 virus circulating in our communities over the coming months.

Children aged over six months and under five years will not be offered vaccination over the summer as the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) considered that there is no scientific justification to continue offering vaccination to this group.

The Scottish and UK Governments will closely monitor the virus as it continues to circulate at low levels during the summer, action will be taken if a further wave occurs. However scientific advice has indicated there is no justification in vaccinating any further groups during the summer.
